He heard the door open and Theo’s excited voice echoing through the foyer. Instead of getting up he remained in bed with a book which had long been discarded for staring at the ceiling. There was still too much white in this house for his tastes. This was still rather new. A house, a yard, a fence, a crup—things Louis never expected his life to have. Then of course Teddy arrived and things became different. To say the least.

He sat up, the movement caused a pain in his back and he grimaced as the door to their new bedroom flew open. Theo’s face was flushed with childish pleasure—his eyes slowly changed between a multitude of colours. Even now, after all this time, Louis scarcely believed their beauty.

“Daddy,” Theo said, thrill spilling into his six year old timbre. “Daddy, Gran Weasley helped me make you a cake.”

“Did she,” he asked as Theo wormed his way up onto their bed. His knees scabby and his body a bit dirty but Louis didn’t mind. It was proof his son’d been living—having fun. Cold fingers, small and twitchy, curved around the swell of his midsection and Louis smiled down at Theo as his face lit up.

“He kicked me!”

“It, we’re not sure it’s a he Theo,” Louis reminded him gently.

“Has to be a brother, girls are icky.” He didn’t say anything, but he was amused—Theo’s aversion to girls was interesting. Louis wound his fingers in Theo’s moss green hair and kissed his forehead. Theo wrinkled his nose. “Daddy that’s gross!”

He pinched Theo’s nose and winked at him. The steady fall of footsteps stopped at the entrance to their room and though he stared at Theo Louis could see the way Teddy leaned in the doorway. No doubt there was a small twitch at the corner of his mouth—Teddy tended to exude happiness.

“Corky is looking for you,” Teddy’s soothing tone filled the room and drew Theo’s eyes from Louis’ abdomen. In the span of a moment he was off the bed and a blur as he zoomed out the door in search of his crup.

Teddy moved deeper into the room, his hand touched one of the boxes Louis had yet to unpack. Long fingers lingered there, smoothed over the cardboard surface while Teddy appeared deep in thought. Louis knew what was coming long before it arrived.

“I’ve been thinking,” Teddy bit his lip as he hesitated and Louis fought the urge to roll his eyes. Teddy often complained Harry was too open and easy to read with his emotions—Louis thought that was like the pot calling the kettle black for Teddy was just as honest in the eyes. “I’ve been thinking,” he started again, “Perhaps we should have a housewarming.”

Louis knew Teddy was afraid of Louis’ refusal—for nearly seven years Louis had denied any kind of family interactions. Certainly they saw Harry and Ginny, James, and Lily on occasion. They also met Bill and Fleur regularly for tea. Dominique, as Louis’ twin, refused to stay away and often kipped on their sofa. And they saw Gran and Granddad once in awhile, but Louis never attended family gatherings. Generally Teddy and Theo went alone and Louis took to staring out windows, playing in rain, painting, dancing—something that didn’t involve facing his family as a grouping.

The most recent family event he’d shown his face for had been Victoire and Al’s wedding. But it’d been nearly three years since then and he’d been dying to leave the entire time. Now they had something permanent—not that a Veela Bond wasn’t permanent—a house and roots made Teddy feel secure. And if it made Teddy feel safe, loved, needed, Louis would provide whatever gave him that security—though he generally conceded with much complaint.

No posing nude for his friends, no talk of sex with exes, buying a house, and giving up his beloved flat—Louis did all of these things out of his growing love for Teddy. If having a family get together needed to be added to the list then so be it.

“Fine,” he said simply as a fairly large kick attacked his innards in the vicinity of his ribs, “Fuck.”

Teddy turned adoring eyes on him and Louis flushed as they shifted slowly from their natural hazel to a sparkling violet. The feeling was different from watching Theo’s eyes. He found Theo’s beautiful and so similar to Teddy’s but where Theo’s eyes invoked feelings of warmth—paternal and loving—Teddy’s eyes sparked a fiery passion and engulfed his soul in its flame. The stir made him feel vulnerable and weak and despite how much he hated being exposed the attentiveness sent an even greater thrill down his spine.

Then Teddy’s hand was on his stomach, his long fingers curled against the swell and calmed Louis with their warmth. There was a life in him—a life half Teddy’s and a life half his—it moved, assuring them both of its existence and reaffirming the love which brought about the being’s creation.

“Strong bugger isn’t she?” Louis smiled as he rolled his eyes at Teddy’s words.

“It, Teddy, we’re not sure what it is.” The baby moved again and Louis felt Teddy’s warm palm follow the baby’s rolling body.

“Whatever,” Teddy snorted, “I’m her father, I know she’s a she.” Louis didn’t have the strength to do any actual arguing as Teddy lifted the hem of his shirt and kissed against the warm skin of his stomach. “Tell your daddy I know,” he whispered against Louis’ pale flesh. His breath was hot and tickled, causing a flush to form across Louis’ cheeks as he watched Teddy worship the disfiguring curve. Teddy looked up and his eyes were a glowing moss green, “I love you, you know.”

“I need you,” Louis replied automatically and a slow, crooked grin slipped across Teddy’s face.

“Dad,” Theo called from the sitting room and the short spell cleared as Teddy turned toward the open door, “I’m hungry and you promised me mash!”

“I did,” Teddy called out teasingly, “I think you’re mistaken. I promised you broccoli.”

“No you didn’t! I hate broccoli!”

Teddy chuckled and pressed a quick kiss to a hard lump pressing against Louis’ stomach, “Your brother’s calling love, I’ve got to go sort him, but I promise I’ll come back.” As he climbed off the bed he whispered, “I’m definitely coming back for you,” to Louis.

A week later, after Louis made Teddy help him paint the living room, hall, and kitchen they held a party. Bloody fucking nightmare, Louis thought as he stood in the kitchen—his eyes trained on the violent orange walls, pretending to admire the bright yellow circles against the orange as he hid away from his boisterous relatives.

Teddy found him, of course, and a strong arm wrapped around his shoulders while Teddy looked at him in concern, “Alright?”

“Peachy,” Louis snapped quietly.

“Thank you,” and that’s all he needed to say—all that was needed to melt the tension in Louis’ body.

“You’re welcome,” he said tightly even though he was relieved and happy that Teddy appreciated what he was putting up with for Teddy, always for Teddy.

“Theo’s enjoying showing off his room.”

Louis laughed, “Is he?”

“Yes apparently your friend Jon has skills—he’s made the coolest mural of Marvin the Mad Muggle,” Louis loved when Teddy drawled in that very dry fashion, and so a small needy groan escaped his lips and Teddy—sharp as ever—noticed. His lips moved against the skin behind Louis’ ear, “You want me, right now, don’t you?” Teddy’s boldness never ceased to amaze Louis—mostly because he’d always regarded Teddy as a giant prude. Until he’d had him then that delusion had disappeared.

It’s always the quiet, nice ones who prove you wrong, he thought as Teddy trailed a finger along the top of his trousers before he dipped it inside—teasing the skin above Louis’ swelling cock.

“Fuck Ted,” he whispered as he turned his face. Louis rubbed his cheek against Teddy’s chin while he enjoyed the soft kisses Teddy peppered against his forehead and nose.

“You’d like me to fuck you now, wouldn’t you,” Teddy whispered, in a tone that suggested they were talking about something as trivial as the weather, but it made Louis hotter, “You want me to push you against the counter and fuck you until you’re hoarse—how fucking hot would it be to let your family hear us?”

“Ehem,” They turned to see Bill in the doorway of the kitchen with a rather uncomfortable look on his face, “I was coming to see if you needed help with anything—obviously there is nothing I can help with here.”

Teddy flushed in embarrassment as Bill turned to leave and spluttered, “Sorry sir,” like a chastised teenager. It made Louis chuckle as he moved out of the circle of Teddy’s hold. “Fuck,” Teddy said, “That definitely killed the moment.”

“Well there will be many more moments when they leave,” Louis said with another laugh, “Now can we go bore them quickly—I want the fucking you promised.”

Victoire’s baby was one of the things Louis didn’t want to see today—or ever—and that probably made him a bad uncle. However, he didn’t care—the knowledge that boy could have been Teddy’s once upon a time was still too fresh and hurt him too much. Especially when Teddy was handed the baby by a proud, beaming Al. He held the boy much as he had held Theo, with a similar smile—Teddy loved children, he was a born father. Innate with goodness, kindness, and love—Louis was grateful his children were lucky enough to have a father as good as Louis’ own.

He didn’t like feeling jealous. Teddy turned a kind smile on Victoire and something clawed at his throat—this was why he hated family gatherings. All of them knew that at one time Teddy had belonged to her. He’d been hers first and Louis doubted he’d ever move past that knowledge.

Theo was in his bed, bright eyes looking up at the ceiling—magicked to show him the universe beyond the skyline. Shooting stars dashed across the ceiling when Louis sat on the bed and looked up, “What are you thinking about?”

“The baby,” Theo said, “Mary says you’ll like the baby more than me. She says that new babies make us less special.”

“Mary needs to have her tongue cut out for lying,” Louis said with an irritated expression, “I’ll have to write her mum.” Molly needed to mind that smart mouth of her brat’s.

Theo smiled and said, “You wouldn’t really cut out her tongue.”

“For you I would,” he said with his own smile, Theo thought he was joking but the man who cleared his throat from the doorway knew the truth.

“Bedtime for the Auror trainee,” Teddy spoke with his usual disarming grin, “We’ve got work in the morning.”

Theo wriggled closer to Louis as he whined, “Work is boring,” then as an afterthought he added, “What kind of work?”

“Shopping for your sister’s crib.”

“Not a sister! I want a brother,” Theo groused as Louis tucked him into bed. “Girls are gross and don’t like Marvin the Mad Muggle!”

Teddy laughed, “You get what you get,” and then he added, “And my little sister liked Marvin the Mad Muggle.”

“Aunt Lily’s different; she’s really a boy Uncle James says.”

“Don’t listen to anything that prat says, he lies like he breathes—if anyone needs their tongue cut out it’s James,” Teddy replied as he moved toward the bed to place a kiss on top of Theo’s head of hair.

“Do you think the baby will be able to change shapes like you and me,” Theo asked Teddy suddenly when Teddy pulled back to leave.

Teddy paused and Louis noticed he’d detected the worry—the fear Theo had of not being special. He glanced at Louis and Louis nodded at him slightly before Teddy softly gave a reply. “If the baby can change shapes then you will both have something in common, and you can show the baby all kinds of neat tricks.” He ruffled Theo’s hair while Louis held Theo’s hand, “And they baby will always think you’re the coolest person in the world.”

“Even cooler than you Dad?”

Teddy laughed and nodded, “Yes, even cooler than me, now go to sleep.”

They watched Theo for a moment as he curled up beneath his covers and called out goodnight to them.

“Goodnight,” they said together in response before they moved down the hall, into their room.

Teddy was on him as soon as the door was locked and the silencing spell settled around them. His mouth was hot, his lips damp against the line of Louis’ throat as Louis’ head tipped back. “God,” Teddy gasped, desperate and demanding as he lifted Louis to carry him to bed.

On the mattress he was lying back, propped up on his elbows as Teddy kneeled over him. Slowly Teddy pulled off his shirt—he was all long, lean lines of solid muscle and Louis thought Teddy was the most handsome being he’d ever seen. He wanted to whisper, to tell Teddy to come closer—for all he wanted was to touch—but he had no words. Louis didn’t need words. Teddy knew, he always knew what Louis needed. He moved closer and pressed against Louis with a deep, lingering kiss. It was languid and searching and made Louis feel a curl of desire through the length of his body.

Louis heard the slide of Teddy’s belt, the zip of his fly, and the rustle of fabric as his trousers were pushed down. He wanted to see all of Teddy, and was given the chance when Teddy sat back to remove his clothing the rest of the way.

Then he was back on his knees as he stared down at Louis, and Louis felt more exposed than Teddy. His eyes were golden in the faint light from the window, they’d shifted again, and they appraised Louis’ body in a manner of worship. It was frightening and caused his heart to hammer in his chest as Teddy slipped his trousers down, over his hips, and off of his legs. Warm fingers toyed with his knees, his inner thigh, the ticklish skin where his leg met his body—movements which aroused him further. However, the most arousing part came when Teddy’s steady fingers lifted the hem of Louis’ shirt, ever so slowly—exposing him to the darkened room and to Teddy’s ignited stare.

He wasn’t ashamed of his nudity—even heavy with child Louis knew he was attractive. Making life was more beautiful than grotesque and Louis was proud to be a part of the creative process. Yet, the way Teddy looked at him, through him, into him, had Louis sucking in a breath and trying to shy away. However, he couldn’t—Teddy had him caught in those hands, with that body, and always with his eyes.

“You’re so fucking beautiful,” Teddy whispered his fingers spread over the hard swell of their baby in Louis’ swollen stomach, “I just want to knock you up for life.”

Louis could have laughed, should have, but he fogged up instead—this was Teddy’s truth, Teddy’s vulnerability, and it belonged to no one but Louis. Teddy wanted to keep him filled. And Louis would let him, because they were both foolish and needed to reaffirm this bond—as if it wasn’t sealed in their magic, their souls.

Teddy pressed into him as he claimed Louis’ mouth with a kiss.

They started slow—unlike any of their beginning couplings. It was nice, for the moment, but soon desire would take them and burn away the last of their control.

His chest was against the headboard hands gripping the wood while on his knees, near the end of it—after Teddy had sated his need to taste all the wonders of Louis’ body. Teddy had a hand gripping the headboard his other held Louis’ hip as he thrust into Louis erratically. Louis mewled and pressed back against Teddy with every thrust.

“Bite me,” he begged and with a lusting snarl Teddy complied. The bruise would be a dark purple for days and he welcomed the mark as he cried out, “Harder.”

He woke in Teddy’s arms to the visage of a man who looked almost like a boy whilst sleeping. His fingertips drew along the straight and handsome lines of Teddy’s face—tracking them for memory.

A smile twitched at the corner of Teddy’s mouth and he said, “I can’t sleep if you keep doing that.”

Unapologetically he replied, “You never sleep past eight and we both know it.”

Teddy only laughed in response before the crup came scratching at the door and drew Teddy’s warmth from the bed.

Their second child was a girl. A tiny being that looked purplish red as she wailed with a mighty set of lungs—Louis watched her with tired eyes. When she was cleaned and wrapped in the cotton blankets the hospital provided she was given to Teddy—just as Theo had been.

Instantly he saw that Teddy didn’t smile at just any child with that smile. This one was distinctively different from the smile he’d given Victoire’s baby. How could Louis think Teddy would love all children the same? He’d made himself blind with jealousy and now he had clarity. Teddy’s eyes sparkled brighter—as if when his eyes fell on the being in his arms she became the sun. His smile wasn’t just one of pleasure, his lips were moved by some other force—a force so deep it moved him to beam.

He was in love with that little girl, like he was in love with Theo, and he was in love with them in the way only a father can fall in love with his children.

“I love you,” he whispered to Louis as he pressed a kiss against Louis’ sweaty hair.

And Louis knew then that he truly meant it—Teddy’s eyes lit up for their children, and not just because they were proof of Teddy’s legacy but because they were pieces of Louis. Because he loved Louis, really, really loved him.

“I love you too,” he said, and Teddy paused—for the first time in nearly seven years Louis said it without the usual I think or Maybe hastily tacked on at the end.

Theo burst into the room along with Bill, Harry, Fleur, and Ginny, ending their moment, “Where’s my brother,” he demanded.

Teddy kissed Louis’ hair again when Louis rolled his heavy eyes. “Not a brother, a sister,” Teddy corrected as he carried her over to meet Theo.

He wrinkled his nose and Louis noticed his parents and Harry and Ginny exchange worried looks. “But I really wanted a brother,” Theo said and they all seemed to be expecting as much. Teddy grinned while Louis felt his heart drop to his stomach.

“But she’s better than a brother,” he said with his usual charm, “Because now you will be our favourite boy.” Theo didn’t seem convinced and Louis watched as Teddy glanced up at their parents. “He’ll come round eventually.”

“Better hope so,” Bill said with a small smile, “Victoire was irritated for years that the twins weren’t both girls.”

“She shoved Louis into a dress often enough as I recall,” Harry said with a wide grin and Louis groaned from the bed.

“Don’t remind me, that bitch.”

“Louis,” Fleur snapped and he apologised quickly.

Teddy laughed.

At home Theo scowled when he saw the baby in her Moses basket, and Louis felt frustrated anytime Theo scowled at him as if it were his fault she came out a girl.

After a month and a half had passed, in similar fashion, Louis pulled Teddy into the kitchen when he came home from work, “Theo’s being difficult.”

“Can you blame him—Theo convinced himself she was a he.” Teddy put the kettle on to make some tea and faced Louis, crossing his arms over his chest and leaning casually against the counter—Louis hated how attractive he was in his scarlet uniform. Especially now when he wanted to be serious and not seriously turned on.

Teddy seemed to pick up on his flush and with a leering grin said, “It’s been quite awhile hasn’t it?”

“Fuck off Ted,” Louis snapped when Teddy’s hand curved around his bum, “At the moment I want to make things right between our children, not ride your cock!”

“I didn’t say you had to ride it but that does sound lovely,” he said and Louis glared. Teddy held up his hands up in mock surrender, “Alright, alright, I’ll sort it.”

“I’ve been trying to sort it for weeks!”

“Shhh,” Teddy said as he pulled Louis closer, “Easy, alright, I’ll make it better—I promise.”

Teddy and his sodding promises.

Teddy disappeared into Theo’s room after they shared a brief kiss, and Louis chewed his lip nervously while he waited on the sofa. Not long after Teddy emerged from the room with Theo grudgingly in tow. Though Theo looked more receptive towards Louis than he had in recent weeks, “Com’ere,” Teddy said with a wave of his arm as he sat on the sofa before the baby. “Look she’s waking up.”

And she was. Her bright blue irises were peeking out through the gap in her eyelids as her eyes fluttered open. Theo approached her with caution, and folded his arms over his chest with a pout as the colour of her eyes changed slowly from blue to the mossy green Theo often wore as hair colour—and there it was, on Theo’s face, a twitch of a smile.

Teddy grinned at Theo, “Go on then show her what I showed you.” Theo sighed as if he was annoyed, but Louis could tell he was trying not to smile.

“Fine,” he said as he sat on the floor by the basket and leaned over the baby. He shifted his face into that of a duck, “Quack, Quack.” For a moment Louis was afraid she’d cry, but slowly she smiled and jerked a little arm out toward Theo.

“Careful,” Teddy reminded Theo as he reached out to touch her hand. Little fingers wrapped around his thumb and Louis could tell Theo was happy.

“Look Dad, she’s got a strong grip—better grip than Uncle James’,” he remarked proudly, “I guess she’s perfect and we can keep her.”

“You reckon,” Teddy said while Louis leaned against him and Teddy kissed his forehead.

Theo was silent for a long minute before he said, “And if Ella isn’t so great, you can always have me a brother later.”

Teddy grinned, “Of course we can.” Louis rolled his eyes. Against Louis’ ear he whispered, “We can start trying for that brother tonight.”

“Hah,” Louis said in response. Though he knew he’d melt for Teddy the moment they entered the bedroom. Teddy had a way of getting beneath Louis’ skin.
